Why do some videos on instagram get brighter?
The automatic brightness increases and adjustments when watching Instagram reels, videos, and some YouTube is actually because of those videos being recorded as HDR video, and how the dynamic range of those videos impacts the display.
You could be experiencing this only for videos that are recorded as High Dynamic Range (HDR). If that type of video is played back with the normal brightness setting, they would seem darker or more subdued in colors than intended.
There's no toggle to disable HDR playback within Instagram. You can't turn off this often-too-bright playback experience system-wide anywhere in iOS settings. These seem like significant oversights when you consider it's been over two years since the iPhone 12 lineup introduced Dolby Vision recording.
Tap at the top to balance exposure and increase brightness. In preview mode, a gray dot will appear below each of the effects you've applied to your photo. For example, a gray dot below Brightness means you've adjusted the brightness of your photo.
This is seemingly more prevalent on iPhone devices, though some Android devices also experience this. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix for this on the viewer's end. Videos shot in HDR — or High Dynamic Range — automatically adjust your display's brightness when viewed on Instagram.
Turn HDR video off and on
On iPhone 12 models, iPhone 13 models, and iPhone 14 models, iPhone records video in Dolby Vision HDR for true-to-life color and contrast. To turn off HDR video recording, go to Settings > Camera > Record Video, then turn off HDR Video.
Adjust the screen brightness automatically
iPhone adjusts the screen brightness for current light conditions using the built-in ambient light sensor. Go to Settings > Accessibility. Tap Display & Text Size, then turn on Auto-Brightness.
HDR stands for high dynamic range. Put simply, it's the range of light and dark tones in your photos. The human eye has a very high dynamic range — which is why we can see details in both shadows and highlights.
Go to Settings > Camera > Record Video > and turn off the HDR Video Toggle.
Select the Start button, then enter settings. Select Settings > System > Display. On the Display settings screen, select Use HDR. Under SDR content brightness or HDR content brightness, drag the slider to get the right balance for brightness between HDR and SDR content.
